A small detail that matters on every trip: what plugs and voltage you'll find in Bhutan.

Voltage and frequency

Bhutan uses 230 volts at 50 hertz. Most phone, camera and laptop chargers handle 100–240 V automatically — check the label. Hair dryers and other appliances from 110 V countries may need a converter.

Plug types

You'll most often meet three-pin Type D sockets (round pins in a triangle, as used in India), along with Type F and Type G. Many hotels have universal sockets, but these aren't guaranteed.

What to pack

  • A universal travel adapter that covers Types D, F and G
  • A small power strip, so one adapter can charge several devices
  • A power bank for long drives, hikes and treks
  • Spare batteries for cameras — cold weather drains them quickly

On trek

There's no mains power on most treks. Bring enough power banks for the days between villages; solar chargers work well in clear autumn weather.
