Best Time to Visit Bhutan

Season by season: rhododendrons, festivals, clear mountain views and quiet winters.

Bhutan is beautiful in every season — the right time depends on what you most want to see.

Spring · March to May

Warm days, blooming rhododendrons and jacaranda, and some of the most popular festivals, including Paro Tshechu. A lovely time for culture and gentle hiking, though mountain views can be hazy.

Summer · June to August

The monsoon season brings lush green valleys, waterfalls and far fewer visitors. Rain usually falls in afternoon showers; high treks are best avoided, but valleys like Bumthang are beautiful.

Autumn · September to November

Clear skies, crisp air and golden rice terraces make autumn the peak season. The great Himalayan views are at their best, and the calendar is full of festivals, from Thimphu Tshechu to the Black-Necked Crane Festival.

Winter · December to February

Cold, dry and bright, with snow on the passes and the clearest views of the year. The black-necked cranes winter in Phobjikha, the subtropical Punakha valley stays mild, and you will often have temples to yourself.

Our suggestion

For festivals and mountain views, come in October or November. For flowers, March to May. For solitude, December to February. For the greenest landscapes and lower demand, the summer months. See our festival calendar for exact 2027 dates.
